Superheroes are the way we signal as a culture what we hope to be as a person. They have honesty, strength, decency, smarts, hustle and determination. They stand in the gap when everything goes to shit and say ‘don’t worry, we’ve got this’. They are our modern mythology, creating people that are bigger than the world they live in.

And now, things are as big and as bad as they’ve ever been. We’re out there desperately looking for people to save the day, and it’s not Tony Stark or Bruce Wayne we’re turning to. It’s certainly not the people we’ve turned into our stand-ins for storybook titans: nobody is looking for Elon Musk or LeBron James to get us out of this mess.

It’s a person delivering a pizza. 

It’s a nurse working their 12th 14-hour day in a row.

It’s somebody fixing a power wire. 

It’s somebody driving a truck.

We found our superheroes, and they were here the whole damned time. In disguise, because that’s what superheroes do. But at least now we recognize them, and can tip our cap and say…
