In one of our proudest moments, we were commissioned by international NGOs FHI360 and USAID to take on a matter of life and death: the AIDS epidemic sweeping across Indonesia.

Specifically, we were commissioned to help destigmatize HIV testing and treatment for some of the most stigmatized groups in Indonesian society. Our work was organized under a brand and campaign called Update Status.

WELCOME TO
UPDATE STATUS

In a market obsessed with social media and appearances, we developed a brand that blended fashion-conscious and aspirational. We removed the language that had previously made HIV testing a terrifying examination of your willingness to confront mortality and remade it into an everyday part of your lifestyle. And if you're positive? If it's treated early and adequately, it will no longer be life-threatening.

A SIMPLE QUESTIONAIRE…

The main course of Update Status was and continues to be a simple online questionnaire. Evoking the feel of taking a personality test, it asks you a few questions created to gauge whether you've been at risk of HIV infection. In the end, your results prompt you to book an appointment at a puskesmas or health clinic, all for free. And that's it. You take the quiz, book the appointment, and get tested. No judgement, no moralizing, no fuss — the whole process could be completed in less than ten minutes. Over the year, we got 29,000+ submissions and helped to create 7000+ clinic bookings.

AFTER A YEAR OF OPERATION,
DATA COLLECTION, AND USER SURVEYS,
WE REFINED THE SITE FURTHER.

We kept the essence of the voice in our main ingredients but served the end result with a better presentation. First, we gathered data based on our user behavior when visiting the site. Then we optimized the features to make sure the site has the answers to their needs. Scroll down below to see how it looks.

OUR USERS TOLD US WHAT THEY NEEDED,
AND WE LISTENED

"How is HIV transmitted?"
"What is ARV?"
"Is my privacy safe?"
"Who is Update Status anyway?"

We realize that getting tested and having in more in-depth knowledge about sexual health could be something new for some people. Referring to our question bank, we got our new users covered with this FAQ section where they can find almost every basic information related to HIV.

We developed a chatbot that would serve many of the same question-and-answer functions as the FAQ, removing yet another impediment to information access. We did this entire process in-house: building the chatbot response matrix, designing a simple UI and UX, and culminating in to the chatbot production itself.

Sometimes, having a companion when going to the clinic can help us feel more at ease. Update Status collaborates with community workers, ready to give you assistance at your HIV testing day whenever needed, first time or not. This section on our site provides their contacts and short profile for you to reach out to them.

We created a simpler look with poppy-yet-warm colors for our new illustration style. Cutting out complexity, the viewer focuses more on the message that the illustration tries to convey. The supergraphics, poses, and outfits are designed to match today's trend and context, so that people would have easy familiarity with the characters on screen.

We create content to destigmatize HIV testing using social media channels; we want people to know that paying attention to their sexual health is normal, healthy, and important.

We couldn't celebrate 2021 World AIDS Day in person, but we celebrated it together nonetheless — and told stories full of love, dreams, and support from from families, friends, and those closest to us.

Introducing:

BAGUS

Your chatty, friendly, fashionable virtual bestie.

His name stands for "Bagian dari Update Status”, meaning he's part of Update Status. Bagus is the personification of our social media admin, who loves to listen to your stories. Every month, Bagus would take over the Update Status' account and start a conversation on Instastory. His warm presence would make you feel comfortable to share and ask questions about sexual health, which Bagus would love to answer and, of course, while respecting your privacy!

Encouraging people to make a booking is one thing,

but making sure that it results in the actual visit is another thing.

From S̶e̶p̶t̶e̶m̶b̶e̶r̶ Socktember to O̶c̶t̶o̶b̶e̶r̶ Soctober 2021, we ran a promotion that offered a free custom pair of Update Status socks to everyone who made a booking online via Update Status and showed up for their clinic appointment.

The campaign resulted in

an over 200% increase in monthly bookings

for the ten participating clinics and tracked

236 actual clinic visits.

Of course, this couldn't happen by our effort alone. Our community workers, clinic workers, and fellow influencers helped us promote the campaign and raise enthusiasm among their clients and followers.

Together, we are creating experiences and media that normalize, promote, and find joy in the act of taking control of your sexual health.
